What is a breather membrane?

There are many roofing membranes available. One option is a breather membrane, sometimes called a breathable membrane. This article explains what breather membranes are, how they work, and why they are used in roofing.

In this article, we cover:

What is a breather membrane used for?

A breather membrane is a layer that can be used in roofing systems. It needs to be fitted underneath the roof covering. It helps to reduce moisture in the roof. Breather membranes should be used in pitched roofing, not flat roofing.

What is the difference between a breathable membrane and a non-breathable membrane?

Breathable and non-breathable membranes keep water out and help prevent damp and mould, but the way that they manage moisture is different.

Breathable membranes let moisture inside the building to escape. They are waterproof, but the material has holes that let water vapour pass through and stop rain getting in. These membranes are a more modern option and are quite popular. They work well under slate or tile roofs, as long as there is good airflow above the membrane.

Non-breathable membranes do not let air or moisture to pass through. They are still used in construction but are better suited to roofs that already have ventilation in place. Because they are very strong and resistant, they are usually used in cold, ventilated pitched roofs. They should not be confused with vapour control layers (VCLs), which are installed on the warm side of insulation to limit moisture entering the building.

Why are breather membranes beneficial

  • Helps prevent condensation
  • Trapped moisture is able escape
  • Can improve energy efficiency
  • Reduces gaps and weak points in insulation
  • Supports healthier indoor air
  • Could potentially reduce the need for extra ventilation products, saving money

What is the main purpose of a breather membrane?
They help reduce condensation and lower the risk of mould.

Are breather membranes waterproof?
Yes, they are waterproof.

Does a roof still need ventilation when using a breather membrane?
