What is BROOF (t4) rating?
British Standard BS476-3
Fire safety is measured by two things, spread of flame and penetration of flame. An A to D scale is used by British Standard BS476-3 to measure both of these fire safety aspects. Flat roofing systems are rated with 2 letters. If a roofing system has achieved BROOF(t4) rating, that means it has been rated either AA, AB, or AC for penetration of flame and spread of flame. This would mean that it has a high level of fire resistance.
European test standards, BS EN 13501-5
BROOF certifications are provided by BS EN 13501-5. T1, t2, t3, and t4 symbolise the different tests used in 4 different countries in Europe. T4 is referencing the UK tests. The UK tests have stricter standards than the other ones, so take care to choose a roofing system that has the t4 certification.
BROOF (t4) Criteria
If a roofing system has achieved BROOF (t4) certification, it means that it has been proven that flames would not penetrate the roof before 60 minutes. It also means that the roof would burn for less than 5 minutes after flames are withdrawn. Thirdly, the roofing system would have demonstrated that flame spread is less than 0.38 metres across the area that is burning.
